The body of an unidentified young woman was found in the veld behind Lennoxton Primary School on Sunday morning.
Newcastle police spokesman, Warrant Officer Simon Luthuli, regretted that such an incident had happened.
“We suspect that the woman was brought here by another person, or had been walking through [the veld] when she was attacked,” said W/O Luthuli.
Signs of struggling were visible on the woman’s body, and it seemed she had been raped and assaulted before she was strangled and murdered.
W/O Luthuli confirmed the police would be investigating the matter, and a case of rape and murder had been opened.
“The woman was extremely strong, because you can see she tried to fight back, but was not given the opportunity to shout for help,” concluded W/O Luthuli.
