Five cows and one bull were run over and killed by a train in Glencoe, with two of the cows leaving behind calves who are only three months old.
These cattle belonged to a local stock farmer, Muzikatshelwana Gxaza Mbatha, who was present during the accident as he herds his stock for grazing every day.
A claim has been made against Transnet, which was alerted to the accident soon after.
The investigation is continuing according to Centralised Traffic Control Newcastle, the office that Glencoe Transnet reports to.
Mr Mbatha believes that if the area was fenced off such accidents would be prevented.
He said he cannot control the cows as they get excited when they see water – there is a bridge under which water runs near the railway line.
Selling his stock is the only income that Mr Mbatha receives, and he uses that money to take care of his family.
The accident has not only left him in despair as two of his cows died pregnant, but the two orphaned calves has added to his burden as the old man has no money to take care of them
