The fast reaction by the K-9 Unit of the police, led to the arrest of an alleged thief on Thursday morning.
Apparently, the suspect had broken into a house during the course of the morning, found the ignition key to the vehicle parked inside the garage, and fled with the car.
“The neighbours noticed unusual activity in the house and contacted the owner of the house to inform them that something was going on,” explained the police.
Upon arrival at his house, the owner realised that his car had been stolen and immediately contacted the police.
An alert was sent to all officials, and the car was seen travelling along the N11 towards Volskrust.
“Members of the K-9 unit returning from highway patrol along the N11, remembered passing the vehicle, and turned around giving chase. The unit managed to find them as they entered Charlestown,” said the police officer.
Both the driver and passenger in the vehicle tried to make a run for it when pulled over by the police, but while the driver was apprehended, the passenger absconded.
“Even an extensive search of the area using the dogs of the K-9 unit revealed nothing of the suspect’s location, and residents with information are encouraged to come forward,” said the policeman.
The driver of the vehicle is currently being held at the oSizweni Police Station.
Sergeant Akash Singh, Warrant Officer Duncan Zwane and Warrant Officer Shashi Singh of the K-9 Unit were commended for their efficient conduct.
