The prevalence of counterfeit money in Newcastle is giving a new spin to the phrase ‘a fast buck’.
A local chain supermarket confirmed there had been numerous instances of fake money being produced at till points, although deft eyes were proving to be the fakers’ downfall.
The store manager said just last week, two people were caught attempting to pay for groceries with fake notes.
Explaining the store’s procedure, the manager said the cashiers would identify someone paying with counterfeit money and then contact the SAPS, who in turn confiscate this fake dosh.
Ultimately, he added, the SAPS would lead investigations into the source of the notes.
About three weeks previously, the manager added, he had received a warning through local crime forums to be on the lookout for fake money, and this message had been communicated to cashiers and staff in general.
Businesses are urged to be vigilant, to assist with the rooting-out of this scourge.
