Higher Education Minister visits troubled FET campus

Flanked by a delegation from the department, the college and Umtshezi Municipality the Minister held a closed meeting at the campus in Shepstone Avenue

Higher Education Minister Higher Education Dr Emmanuel Bonginkosi “Blade” Nzimande visited the beleaguered Mnambithi FET College campus this morning, Friday, June 13.
Flanked by a delegation from the department, the college and Umtshezi Municipality the Minister held a closed meeting at the campus in Shepstone Avenue before taking a short walk to the gate to view the outside student’s residence building at Estcourt High School.
Mr Nzimande remarked that the accommodation at the school looked ‘great’ and enquired about the vacant land outside the campus.
He said he hoped that ‘tighter’ future planning would see the land utilised for the FET facilities.
Without any small talk, the delegation walked back to their cars and drove off to the municipality where a closed meeting is being held with councillors and management.
The Minister’s visit is undoubtedly prompted by the recent reports that students were starving and had no place to live.
The town’s businesspeople were called on to support the students, some of whom are from neighbouring towns, and responded generously.
