Boys’ behaviour to be ‘corrected’

Jail was the only option for the boys

Three young boys from Sithembile have been sent to the children’s prison in Newcastle after the Glencoe magistrate court ruled so.
This will be a relief to Glencoe and Sithembile residents, who have had enough of the minors breaking into their homes and stealing anything valuable to sell.
These boys, aged between nine and twelve, have taken to crime, much to the annoyance of the community. Two will be serving five years at the Newcastle School of Industries, and one at Sinethemba Secure Centre, also in Newcastle.
Glencoe SAPS Communications Officer, W/o Dlamini, said that an assessment was conducted by the Department of Social Development in Glencoe where social workers visited the homes of the three boys. They found that they come from average stable homes, and they still live with both of their parents.
However, it transpired that these minors did not like attending school, therefore they ‘bunked’ school and out of boredom they ended up turning to committing crime. Dlamini also mentioned that it is also possible that these boys were being used by older people to steal. They mainly stole DVDs, cellphones and CDs, many of which the police have recovered. Another thing these boys are said to have always been stealing was whatever food they find in the fridge – they would eat and throw it all out, leaving a big mess behind.
Communications Officer Dlamini explained that the parents are also relieved with the court’s decision, and hope that their kids will come back better people. They will be attending school whilst serving their sentences.
Dlamini urges the community not to hesitate to work with the police and report crime. It is believed that these three boys are not the only ones currently involved in crime – there are number of groups of young boys doing the same in Glencoe and Sithembile.
Calls made to the the Department of Social Development headoffice for comment were unsuccessful.
