A young Sithembile girl has had the township up in arms after it was said that she became ‘possessed by an evil spirit’ when she attempted to stab a five-year-old boy and also threatened her brother and uncle with a knife she had chained around her neck.
The girl, thought to be around 12-years-old, ‘went wild’ last Wednesday when she confronted the five-year-old at the Sithembile family hostel units.
This was after the knife-brandishing girl had chased after her older brother and uncle.
A neighbour said the girl broke open the door and windows in one of the houses at the hostel in an attempt to get to her brother who had taken refuge inside the complex.
When she could not find her brother, she threatened a young girl with the knife.
Witnesses said ‘many were crying fearing that she might stab the child, in God’s grace she did not.’
Neighbours said this was the first time they had seen the girl ‘act so wild’.
The police were called to assist, but by the time they arrived. the girl had already ran away. Police tracked her down near the abattoir where they had to forcefully remove her and put her at the back of a van.
They took her to the Siphimpilo clinic but t nurses referred her to Dundee Hospital because there is not psychiatrist at the clinic. The police confirmed that the girl had removed the handcuffs they have put on her and they do not know how. The minor was admitted to Dundee hospital but no case opened.
It was said that in sometime in May she had started screaming, crying and acting violently while in class at Amakhemfundo Primary School.
She also ‘threw things around’. Fellow students tried to restrain her but she was too strong for them.
Other pupils started praying for her. She eventually fainted and when came round, acted ‘normally’.
Mr Ngobese, acting school principal, who also teaches the girl described her as a a very down-to-earth; humble student who is very co-operative in class.
He dismissed rumours that there were tables broken at the school. “I was informed by the teacher who was there when the incident happened, I went to speak to the student and she was fine and spoke back to me like a normal person,” explained Mr Ngobese.
