Road cleared after convoy smash
A collision near nine-mile (P483) on June 20 saw three prisoners rushed to hospital under police guard.
Police and prisoners were injured in a collision on the P483 near nine-mile today (June 20).
According to sources, a SAPS van transporting 10 prisoners to holding cells at oSizweni collided with a K9 Unit vehicle leading the convoy, which resulted in the van overturning.
Three of the prisoners were injured, and were rushed to Madadeni Hospital for treatment.
Paramedics on the scene said although the injuries appeared to be not life threatening, one of the prisoners had sustained possibly serious chest injuries during the collision.
Police escorted both paramedics and the prisoners to where they would receive treatment.
All prisoners were accounted for under an armed guard of SAPS members, and traffic officials stepped in to reroute traffic from the main road leading to oSizweni.
The route had since been cleared for use by the public.
