WARNING - Graphic content. Bruno was surrendered to the Newcastle SPCA, with a hole punched through his throat from where a chain was attached.
A 4-year-old male Boerboel-cross was surrendered to the SPCA last Friday with a carabiner savagely bolted through the flesh in his throat.
According to Elize van Rooyen, Inspector at the Newcastle SPCA, a local resident brought Bruno in last week because it was “troubling the neighbours”, and was “always breaking the chain and belt.”
“The dog was received in a poor condition, and only after the resident had left and we removed the collar, did we realise its chain had been attached through the flesh in its throat,” explained an anguished Ms van Rooyen.
Sadly, Bruno had to be euthanised due to severe malnutrition. “His ribs were clearly visible through the skin, and his hip bones was hollowed out. There was little sign of muscle on his bones.”
Ms van Rooyen immediately contacted the resident, who allegedly proceeded to give a less than impressive explanation as to how he inserted the metal object into the Bruno’s skin.
“He said to me; ‘It just went into Bruno’s neck on its own, without any effort on my behalf”,” exclaimed Ms van Rooyen.
The SPCA is now investigating a case of animal cruelty. More updates will follow as the investigation develops.
Earlier this year, a similar dog abuse case rocked Newcastle to its core.
