Residents of Endumeni were left reeling with shock after an astounding 18 motor vehicle accidents were reported in and around Dundee this weekend.
At least three deaths – including that of a pedestrian – were recorded.
According to Captain V Mbense, Police Communications Officer, “Eight of the accidents occurred on Saturday, July 19, whereby only slight injuries were sustained.
“These accidents were believed to have been as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol, and negligence as a result of being ‘festive at the Dundee July’,” Captain Mbense said. “A further ten accidents took place on Sunday, July 20 – one of these accidents resulted in the death of pedestrian Simo Dlamini, who was run over in Victoria Street near Dundee Secondary School.”
Two people died in a head-on collision near Hattingspruit at about 11pm on Saturday. It is believed that at least one of the vehicles was returning from the Dundee July.
In France, adjacent to Sibongile, two vehicles collided with each other, leaving one driver injured.
A taxi crashed into a precast wall on Tandy Street at about 1am on Sunday. Witnesses said the driver fled the scene while the passengers ‘sat in the gutter and continued drinking’.
