Hotel woman slightly injured in construction blast

The blasts help to remove huge rocks for the construction of a new-slipway on the still-under construction N11. The N11 is expected to be almost completed by September.

A woman was slightly injured and the new Sunset Rest Hotel suffered minor damages when the building was hit by flying rocks following a construction blast today.

The woman, an employee at the hotel, was treated by paramedics for a ‘headache’.

Lal Badrinarain, owner of the hotel, said he was not happy that the blast had hit parts of the building – including a wall, fence while other rocks fell into the garden.

Contractors from Stefanutti Stocks said they have conducted around 30 blasts over the past few days.

Contractors on the scene were happy that all precautions had been taken to ensure the safety of people and property in the vicinity and traffic stopped -, as is the case when such explosions are conducted.

However, Mr Badrinarain is adamant he wants compensation, as he fears the construction blasts will continue to damage his property.

He said he has spent ‘millions of Rands’ since 2010 on the 62-room B and B and 40-room hotel. “The complex also includes a hall, conference centre and a night club – that is yet to open.”
