Ladysmith police were instrumental in netting a suspect accused of stealing a large amount of money in Durban.
Last weekend, the Ladysmith Cluster Trio Crime Task Team was approached for assistance by Durban North detectives in tracing a man who had allegedly stolen around $100,000 in the Durban North area.
It was suspected that the man was travelling to Gauteng to dispose of his ‘loot’. The officers, under the command of Major Jan van Straten, wasted no time in springing into action.
They roped in the help of the Ladysmith K9 Unit, Ladysmith Visible Policing and DPCI (Hawks) in the Free State.
Durban North detectives also travelled down with Pietermaritzburg K9 officers and Magma security personnel.
It was a daunting task, because information pointed to the fact that the suspect was either travelling in public transport (taxi) or a truck.
In a highly co-ordinated effort, roadblocks were set up at the Tugela Toll Plaza and Wilge Toll Plaza.
By 4am on Sunday morning, the team had nabbed the 30-year-old suspect. During the arrest, police found that the thief had cleverly concealed the currency in a decoder, but he was no match for the determined policemen who were tracking him down.
