An armed robber will serve a decade behind bars after being convicted recently.

This after a business in Alexandra Street was robbed by three suspects on the morning of August 23 last year. The robbers, armed with knives and a firearm, entered the shop and held up the owner and his employees. Cash and goods from the shop were stolen before they fled.

Police were alerted and gave chase. Two of the robbers were arrested in the CBD about half an hour later by Ladysmith detectives and Ladysmith Visible Policing officers. The two accused appeared in court, where charges were withdrawn against one of them.

22-year-old Melody Bongani Khumalo was found guilty of aggravated robbery. On July 24 this year, he was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
