Heroic doctor recalls fatal accident scene

A Dundee doctor did his best to save the lives of two seriously injured children after the horror crash on the N11 yesterday afternoon (Sunday). The accident left six people dead and four others seriously injured. Dr Sibeko from Dundee Hospital happened to be travelling behind one of the vehicles involved in the accident. “I heard a loud bang and then saw smoke,” recalls Dr Sibeko. He explained how the vehicle was almost gutted by a fire that started after the crash. He, along with EMRS paramedics, were among the first on the scene and did their best to save the lives of those involved. The doctor described the scene as chaotic. “I saw two boys lying there helplessly with small flames starting in the vehicle. However, I did not see who put out the flames, but someone had a fire extinguisher.” Sadly, all Dr Sibeko’s efforts to save the young boys were in vain, as both died at the scene. Emergency services spent hours stabilising the injured from the other car and the N11 was blocked for close to three hours, causing massive traffic build-up. An accident investigation team led by Captain Dolf Otto has been deployed from Pietermaritzburg to investigate the incident.
