Councillors to consider presentations

"Our aims and objectives are to give the municipality an opportunity to give these people recognition and also to give the people a chance to come back home and do something for their community," said Ms Zungu

Two presentations were made to councillors at the meeting held last Wednesday.
The first was from Thandeka Sithole from the Home Affairs Department who briefly explained the significance of the National Population Register (NPR) campaign.
A document that was circulated explained that the NPR outreach programme was designed to provide citizens with relevant documents, bring services closer to residents and avail services to people living in remote areas.
The campaign will take place on September 12 and 13 but prior to this, councillors and the municipality have been tasked with assisting by sensitising residents to the campaign by means of meetings and public awareness programmes.
The second presentation was from NKZ Events and Communications, a Johannesburg-based company that is operated by locals.
Sbonga Zungu who was born and raised in Weenen and her colleague Bongani Mhlangu explained their idea to host an annual Umtshezi Municipality Recognition Awards ceremony to honour and recognise locals who have put Umtshezi on the map. Names like Sonia Raciti, Willies Mchunu and Nhlanhla Nene, among others were mentioned.
“Our aims and objectives are to give the municipality an opportunity to give these people recognition and also to give the people a chance to come back home and do something for their community,” said Ms Zungu.
Councillors agreed it was a great idea.
