Heroic Serrgiou helped crash victims
Quick thinking Serggiou was among the first people on scene at the horror Elandslaagte crash.

Many people were horrified when they heard news of the Elandslaagte accident, but Serggiou Naidoo’s
traumatic experience was far more horrifying.
Serggiou was among the first people on the scene of the fatal crash which claimed six lives and watched as two helpless children lay on the road in a pool of blood. “Many thoughts ran through my mind, but I realised that I’m the only person these people have so I tried to save as many people as I could, he said.” Dundee Hospital’s Dr Sibeko who arrived on the scene first, handed Serggiou gloves as the pair set out to rescue the victims of the horrifying crash. Serggiou described how ‘ small flames began to envelop one of the vehicles and how driver and passenger (who was seated behind the driver) became mangled up in the seat belt.’ Serggiou began cutting the seat belt with a Stanley knife in an attempt to free the victims. “One of the victims caught in the seat belt had sustained serious head injuries and blood and brains oozed out of his wounds”, he said.
A passing by truck driver was stopped and a fire extinguisher, obtained from the truck, was used to douse the flames of the vehicle. Dr Sibeko and Serggiou rushed to attend to the people in the other vehicle. Serggiou related in vivid detail how he pulled out the victims from the other vehicle, only to find one of the boys had sustained serious leg injuries. “His legs must have been badly broken as they felt like jelly”, Serggiou added. Unfortunately despite Serggiou’s brave efforts as well as those of Dr Sibeko’s six people sadly passed away.
