The public has been warned to be on the lookout for conmen from Durban who swindle especially elderly Indian residents out of their precious gold jewellery.
S Beharie of Wasbank Road, Glencoe, fell victim to the swindle when the two men, driving an ND-registered vehicle, arrived at his home and asked if he had any gold they could buy from him.

“I fetched my gold necklace, which is worth about R5 000. They took it and said they want to test it on a scale in their vehicle. But they left and never came back,” Mr Beharie told the Courier.

Frantic with worry, he called the police and a friend who offered to drive Mr Beharie around to look for the gang. “We eventually found them on the way to Wasbank and managed to pull them over. I asked them why they were stealing my necklace. By then I saw that the chain was broken. They apologised and offered me R1 200 for the piece.
“I was so upset that I just accepted the offer so I could get over the incident.”
The Beharie family have warned others not to be taken in by the smooth-talking Durban conmen.
