UDM suspends two senior managers
A pall of controversy once again hands over local government
The never ending drama in local government continued this week when the Umzinyathi District Municipality told the municipal manager and chief financial officer to ‘take special leave’.
Observers say this is just another word for the ‘suspension’ of Mdu Mngomezulu and S Shongwe
An executive committee meeting of the District Municipality resolved that both be suspended for 21 days to ‘allow Council to consider allegations of misconduct that were aid against them.’
It alleged that Mr Mngomezulu was traced by Umzinyathi security officers to a shopping centre in Newcastle after they he had been accused of being in possession of a municipal laptop.
It was said Mr Mngomezulu tried to resist and guards wrestled him to take the lap top from him.
The suspension of the two managers follows on for the suspension of another official on allegations of the theft of the personal file of a bodyguard who had died.
It was alleged that the file was stolen in a bid to manipulate the beneficiary pay-outs from the dead man’s policies.
Technical Manager Thami Malunga has been seconded as an acting municipal manager.
