Bay vendors to be moved

Warnings will be issued to hawkers to move from parking bays.

Hawkers who operate their vending businesses from municipal parking bays may soon have to ‘shut shop’.

The municipal Traffic Department is to clamp down on especially fruit and vegetable sellers who ply their trade free of charge by not feeding the parking meter.

The hot-spots are King Edward and lower Victoria Streets.

Mandla Ndlovu, Endumeni Traffic Chief, said traffic wardens will be issuing warnings to these hawkers to remove themselves and their vehicles from the parking bays.

He added that, following complaints from residents and businesses, hawkers in the vicinity of ABSA Bank are also going to be shifted.

“We received complaints of people not being able to access the bank because the pavement was blocked with bags and other goods that were being sold by street vendors. They too will be told to move on.”

Anthon Raubenheimer, Ward 2 Councillor, said Council should follow the examples of other towns by zoning a specific area from where hawkers can operate without fear of prosecution.
