A FAMILIAR feature in Vryheid’s landscape, the Paddadam was once a beautiful, safe and well equipped park and playground.
Over the years, however, the Paddadam has deteriorated and become both unsafe and unattractive. Those who recall the beauty and splendour of this recreational area several years ago will be pleased to know that Ward 9 Councillor, Bennie Hancke and Dominee Ferdinand van Niekerk, have started a project to restore the Paddadam to its former glory.
Community members are stepping in to assist with the clean up, under the leadership of Doug Grewar, a Vryheid resident and member of the AbaQulusi Residents’ Association , who is somewhat well known for getting things done. The restoration is expected to take quite some time to complete, but with the assistance and hard work of willing and able community members, rapid progress is being made.
The Kariba Weed, or Salvinia molesta, which has become an overwhelming problem at the Paddadam is in the process of being removed, but this has been a lengthy procedure, with several community members stepping in to do their bit.
Anyone who would like to step in and assist can contact Doug Grewar.
