A 27-year-old woman fell prey to the ‘found money’ scam yesterday (Wednesday, September 3).
It is alleged that the resident had just withdrawn money from the bank when she was approached by a woman who had ‘found’ a bag of money and indicated that she wanted to share the find. The resident followed the woman to a secluded area near Van Riebeeck Park.
Shortly after arriving there, four men appeared and robbed the resident of all her belongings.
The ‘found money’ scam lures potential victims to a secluded spot, where they are then robbed. With this in mind, the community is requested to be vigilant before they enter a bank, during their visit to a bank and upon exiting a bank. Make sure you are not being watched or followed.
If approached by anyone with a supposedly “found” money bag, leave immediately and find a safe place where you can contact police. Whatever you do, do not accompany them!
