The SAPS Upper Tugela Borderline Control Unit recently made a dent in the dagga trade. The group, who are responsible for policing the border between Bergville and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, recently seized about 160kg of dagga and made three arrests.
The first arrest was made on Sunday, September 7 , when they spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle in the Sandlawana area. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off. Police gave chase and the suspect later lost control of his vehicle when a tyre burst during the pursuit. The vehicle came to a standstill and police arrested the driver. He was found to be in possession of about 80kg of dagga.
The street value of the dagga is estimated to be between R8000 and R10,000. The suspect is 40 years of age.
The second incident occurred later the same day when the members were following up on information received about drug trafficking in the area. Police stopped a vehicle and found another load of about 80kg.
Two suspects, both aged 27, were arrested.
The arrested suspects will appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of dagga.
