Five suspects were arrested after the National Intervention Unit came under fire by suspects involved in the theft of a motor vehicle.
The officers were conducting crime prevention activities in the Ezakheni area yesterday (Sunday) when they received information about a stolen vehicle in the Zwelisha area of Ezakheni. The policemen soon spotted the stolen vehicle and five suspects.
One of the suspects pulled out a pistol and opened fire on police.
The officers returned fire and the suspect, aged about 30, was shot in the arm.
The shooter was arrested and is currently in hospital under police guard. An unlicensed pistol was found in his possession, along with ammunition. He faces charges of attempted murder and being in the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The other four suspects – aged 23, 24, 26 and 28 – were also arrested and face charges of being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle and being in possession of unlicensed ammunition. They are set to appear in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court this week.
The stolen vehicle was reported to have been taken during a carjacking in Meadowlands on Thursday, October 2.
