A high-speed chase on Friday saw police recovering a stolen vehicle, as well as stolen copper wire.
Besters police officers Constable MN Nair and Constable SR Nkosi were patrolling the N3 highway and R103 on Friday and as the duo approached the St Joseph Mission area along the R103, they came across a suspicious-looking silver Mazda 323 along the road. As they approached the vehicle, it sped off. The officers took off in pursuit of the vehicle, which was now travelling along the R103 towards Ladysmith.
The driver of the Mazda at times drove recklessly, veering into oncoming traffic in an attempt to get away from police.
During the pursuit, Ladysmith police were contacted and mobilised a roadblock at the Colenso turn-off on the R103/Harrismith Road. Upon approaching the roadblock, the Mazda suddenly came to a stop and the two occupants fled into the dense bushes and veld.
Police gave chase, but the search was called off as daylight faded and there was still no sign of the suspects.
Upon seizure of the vehicle, police found one roll of stolen copper wire and 10 transformer coils of copper wire, together with a hacksaw. The stolen items are property of Eskom.
It was also established that the vehicle used by the suspects had been stolen from its owner on April 30 in Kempton Park, Johannesburg.
