A breakthrough by a task team of detectives has seen the arrest of a housebreaking suspect and the recovery of about R50,000 worth of stolen property. The task team was set up under ‘Operation Vulindlela’, which is aimed at identifying and arresting perpetrators in housebreaking cases at both businesses and homes in the Ladysmith area.
The detectives made their breakthrough yesterday (Monday) morning while following up on information about stolen property. This led them to the CBD, where they arrested a 26-year-old suspect. Further investigation in the CBD and in Tsakane, Steadville, turned up various items of stolen property.
The estimated value of the recovered property is about R50,000. The property included items such as jewellery, cell-phones, cameras, perfume, hairdryers and a DVD player. Some of the property has already been linked to three cases of housebreaking that occurred this month, and more cases are expected to be linked to the property.
The suspect is set to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court today (Tuesday) on charges of housebreaking and theft, as well as possession of suspected stolen property.
