Ithala rewards voters for ‘Best Performing Mayor’
Phakamani Buthelezi of oSizweni and Nomusa Mabaso from Madadeni were two winners of free electricity.
In a competition held by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Newcastle Mayor, Afzul Rehman, was crowned Best Performing Mayor for the third consecutive year.
Twenty members of the public who used the voting line to vote for the best mayor were selected at random to each win R 6 000 in free electricity for a year, sponsored by Ithala Limited. Ithala created and managed the voting line, generating 77 000 votes for 2014, against 10 000 in 2013.
Phakamani Buthelezi of oSizweni and Nomusa Mabaso from Madadeni were two winners of free electricity who received their prizes recently from the mayor and representatives from Ithala.
They were ecstatic that Cllr Rehman had taken the title again.
“This is our mayor. We love him; he’s the best we’ve had that is why we voted for him,” said Miss Mabaso.
Cllr Rehman thanked everyone who had voted for him.
“Thank you for supporting me during this competition. I know the support of my community does not end with their votes. They vote because they have seen a difference in Newcastle. My team and I will continue with to work harder and faster in our service delivery.”
