Four robbers are behind bars after unwittingly targeting a police officer who was wearing civilian clothing.
The officer was robbed by four male suspects in Lyell Street on Tuesday afternoon.
The policeman was suddenly surrounded by the group, whose intentions were hardly innocent. While struggling with one of them, the others made off with his cell-phone. All four then fled.
The police officer chased down and arrested one of the men. He then quickly requested back-up and Ladysmith Crime Intelligence Gathering officers were quick to respond. This resulted in the other three suspects also being arrested.
The stolen cell-phone was recovered.
The four robbers are suspected to be part of a group that has been operating in the lower CBD area, and police are investigating possible links to other similar robbery cases.
All four suspects – aged 24, 27 (two) and 32 – appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Thursday) on charges of robbery.
