Endumeni Municipality on a ‘cleaning-spree’

Help keep Endumeni Clean...

Cleaning up seems to be one of the priorities that the municipality is eager to accomplish. Two groups have been deployed in Dundee and Glencoe to remove all the garbage in the streets, as well as all the hot-spots in these two areas. Endumeni Municipality provides the equipment necessary to complete the tasks daily as these workers are allocated to also clean the central business district.

The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) is a project initiated and funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs with the aim to keep the town clean, thereby attracting more visitors into town. These projects also reduce the rate of unemployment for both men and women and this one alone has created jobs for about 20 people who are to benefit from it. These people are to be sent for skills training later during the course of the project
Rajan Dubree, Endumeni Waste Management Officer, said that the department of Environmental Affairs need to make sure that the by-law are in place and implemented effectively by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

Supervisor of the Dundee group, Ayanda Mpanza, said that they do not only clean, but also educate people on how to take care of their environment and the importance of dumping their cabbages inside the bin rather than outside. They however mentioned that this task is not easy because people always ignore the important factors of illegal dumping and feel they cannot do anything about the situation they can only educate others. The group can only do much to help clean the areas but the community need to make sure that they themselves also play a role in helping the municipality keep the town clean.
