Storm destroys 150 homes in Ntabamhlophe

Imbabazane Municipality Mayor Phindile Strydom says that the devastating storm lasted for less than 20 minutes and caused extensive damage in ward three

Residents in Ntabamhlophe started 2015 on a disastrous note. More than 150 homes were affected by a severe thunderstorm in Ntabamhlophe on New Year’s Day. A severe storm, accompanied by heavy rain and gusty winds swept through the area, blowing off roofs, damaging homes, injuring residents and severing electricity supply.
The library was also damaged; its roof and door were destroyed.

Imbabazane Municipality Mayor Phindile Strydom says that the devastating storm lasted for less than 20 minutes and caused extensive damage in ward three. Other wards that were affected are four, five, six and seven. Mrs Strydom said that when she and a team from local and provincial government visited the affected areas, it was evident that the team would have to work systematically and efficiently to assist the residents.

“We sub-divided all the wards into smaller areas so that we can help everyone. Representatives from Sassa, Home Affairs, Cogta, Uthukela District Municipality, Imbabazane Municipality and disaster units were called out on a holiday and everyone made themselves available to help,” she commented.

Families who lost their homes were given wooden Wendy houses to utilise as temporary shelter. Food parcels were also handed out and Sassa and Home Affairs officials assisted residents who lost their documentation. Residents who were slightly injured were also treated.

“Right now we are busy with intervention and distributing essential items that people need,” said Mrs Strydom.
She added that residents should be vigilant during these thunderstorm prone summer months. “Be aware and check the weather report for the day. I would like to thank everyone who assisted so willingly after this storm, from the councillors to neighbours, disaster units to government departments, we are grateful for your help,” concluded Mrs Strydom.
