50 people were arrested during December 2014; this was for a variety of crimes ranging from murder to drunk driving.
Police spokesperson Captain JS Sokhela released the official statistics on Monday, saying that maximum police manpower was deployed during December to ensure that the town is safe.

The following arrests were made:
• 20 for assault
• two illegal immigrants arrested
• six for malicious damage to property
• five for drunk driving
• one for fraud
• one for violation of a protection order
• two for possession of stolen property
• three for possession of unlicensed firearms
• one for stock theft
• three for murder
• one for possession of counterfeit goods
• one for burglary
• two for pointing a firearm
• two for rape.

Captain Sokhela added that no specialised projects were planned because police were deployed at a number of public events. “The events that were successfully policed are the African National Congress conference of the Ukhahlamba Region held at Mimosadale School from December 13 to 14, the bash at Lambert Park on December 16, the Umtshezi Municipality Imbizo at Lambert Park from December 24 to 25 and the visit of the State President Jacob Zuma at Bhekuzulu on December 30,” he explained. No incidents were reported at any of these events.
