Mediclinic rings in the changes
The new ward added 36 beds which will be used by surgical and medical patients.
Mediclinic Newcastle officially opened a new ward on Wednesday morning, January 14.
The new ward added 36 beds which will be used by surgical and medical patients.
An isolation facility for contagious diseases has also been installed into the ward, making it possible for medical staff to treat patients in a secure and safe environment.
Hospital manager, Freddie Meiring, officiated over the opening of Ward E by thanking everyone involved in its establishment.
“It has been a long and difficult road but the staff have persevered and the ward will provide a valuable service to the community,” he said.
Mariette Claassen, network marketing manager, said during the construction of the ward, the contractors went out of their way to ensure the relevant criteria of the Department of Health was met, prior to the commissioning of the new unit.
“Mediclinic has recognised three areas in which it still needed to expand: theatre, paediatrics and Intensive Care,” said Mrs Claassen.
Mariaan Oliver, unit manager of Ward E, said with the extra rooms, people would not have to be turned away.
“We had to transfer patients and it was not ideal for patients support systems. Being placed in a hospital within your own community allows your family, friends and pastors to visit,” she emphasised.
Furthermore, Sister Olivier said the ward is staffed by 36 staff members, consisting of nursing and administrative staff.
With Chairman of the Board, Dr Otto Nel, cutting the ribbon and officially opening Ward E, it was a matter of great joy when the first patients were rolled in and truly brought the ward to life.
