Rare, venomous Rinkhals in Poona Road

"This is the first Rinkhals I have seen with such different coloration. This Rinkhals is very rare!"

A metre-long-plus venomous Rinkhals snake was encountered in Poona Road yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

The Rinkhals is part of the Cobra family and can also accurately spit venom from a distance. It collects venom in its mouth and then strikes at its target if it feels threatened.

A Rinkhals can be identified by white bands under its neck.

The snake removal team was called to Poona Road by Mr Naicker.

Mr Naicker initially saw the snake in his neighbour’s yard. The Rinkhals then moved into his yard and slithered into his garage.

Snake expert Fanie Cilliers responded to the scene and removed the snake from the garage, safely relocating it away from town.

Fanie commented that, “This is the first Rinkhals I have seen with such different coloration. This Rinkhals is very rare!”
