19 people were recently arrested in the Ladysmith CBD area as a result of crime prevention operations in which Ladysmith police worked hand-in-hand with the Durban Rapid Rail Police Unit.
The operations were held from May 19 to 21, with 11 arrests being made in Lyell Street, Illing Road and Forbes Street for possession of drugs.
The suspects are between 24 and 46 years of age and the drugs seized consist of dagga, mandrax and heroin.
The suspects appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court last week.
The group of police officials also arrested seven people for illegally crossing the railway track in Crawshaw Road. The seven were released on a warning to appear in court in June. The suspects are aged between 33 and 52 years old.
In addition, a 27-year-old man was arrested in Newcastle Road for selling counterfeit DVDs and CDs. He appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday last week.
During the operations, over 220 people were searched by police and seven scrap metal dealerships were also visited to ensure compliance with the law.
