Public Safety received a complaint from the Municipal Electric store on the N11 that some persons were seen carrying away electric cables from their premises this morning (Tuesday).
Five suspects were spotted and ordered to stop, but they immediately fledĀ into a nearby bush/ open veld with the copper in their hands.
Public Safety immediately asked K9 for help and both team members started hunting for the suspects.
As the suspects fled they dropped some of the copper in an attempt to escape arrest.
The officers recovered some of the stolen copper.
The suspects are still at large.
During the pursuit the officers also came across a fire that was ablaze in the area and summoned the Fire Department to extinguish it.
Apparently the fire was started by the thieves using the light bulbs from street poles to extract copper. Once the copper was out the light bulb covers were left to burn out. That’s how the fire spread.
No arrests have been made.
