Parts of Brewitt Road were plunged into darkness on Saturday, July 11. This was again at the hands of suspected cable thieves.
At about 2.26am, the local emergency services was alerted of suspected cable theft in Brewitt Road and the municipality’s electricity department was informed.
Reports of cable theft in Estcourt have been escalating with the brazen suspects pouncing during the early hours of the morning. More recently, cable thieves damaged electrical boxes and street light poles in Beechwood Road and Richmond Road.
In last week’s Estcourt News, Umtshezi Municipality’s Acting Municipal Manager Elphas Dladla said that more than R50 000 had been spent repairing and replacing electrical cables damaged by suspected cable thieves and on overtime.
He added that police investigations have not proven fruitful and the perpetrators are still at large. The community is urged to immediately contact the Estcourt police on 036 342 9525 if cable theft is suspected.
