Car crashes into wall in Barry Hertzog Park

The vehicle involved in the incident is believed to be a blue Toyota Avanza.

Sometime between 10.15 and 10.30pm last night, a car reportedly crashed into the wall of a home in Barry Hertzog Park.

Shards of the vehicle’s number plate and its mirror lie scattered near the section of precast damaged in the smash.

A resident of the home, Nonhlakanipho Mbatha, said a neighbour woke up them to inform them what had happened. Initially, the neighbour thought he’d heard gunshots.

“They said they saw a Blue Avanza speeding off, but they weren’t sure in which direction it went,” she explained. “Our neighbour, who is a police officer, reported the matter and police were on scene to investigate last night.”

The blue paints marks on the precast wall suggest their neighbour’s description of the vehicle involved may well be correct.

Mrs Mbatha said she didn’t hear anything, but her daughter, who was in the living room at the time, heard a loud bang.

She expressed her dismay as to why the driver decided to flee the scene, and predicts they may have been under the influence.

“A decent person won’t do something like this and run away,” she concluded.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is advised to contact Newcastle Police immediately.

Investigations continue.
