Young Duncan Vermeulen beamed with joy on his big day, a far cry from the numerous operations he underwent to get him walking.
A brave resident celebrated his 10th birthday among friends and family on Saturday.

However, the journey is not yet complete.
Moments before Duncan received gifts from his nearest and dearest, his mother, Louise Vermeulen said there was another operation to take place in late November.
This operation will cost in the region of R110 000.
“He went for the first operation at five-years-old. We believe there will be a way,” she said with emotion.
The Vermeulen family have been blessed thus far by two anonymous residents, who collectively refer to themselves as ‘Duncan’s Angels’.
These Samaritans are also holders of a trust fund to assist other children in need.
“We have been so blessed since day one,” Mrs Vermeulen said, watching as her son made slow, but steady progress with the aid of a walking device.
Duncan’s birthday was a time of great celebration.
The atmosphere at the Equestrian Club was one of gaiety, adults tending the braai fire and socialising not far from where children rode supervised on horseback.
Even Duncan enjoyed some time in the saddle.
“We just thank everyone who made this possible; Steers Newcastle, ReMax, Paul Bushell, the Equestrian Club, family and friends,” said Mrs Vermeulen.
