“The long arm of the law has finally apprehended a fraud suspect,” this was the comment from a police spokesperson after a Gauteng man was arrested last week for allegedly defrauding a local.
Lieutenant Colonel TM Mabaso explained that the complainant, whose name has not been revealed, responded to a car for sale advert in a national newspaper in October 2014.
The man was interested in a blue 2012 VW Polo advertised for R149 000 and contacted the advertiser. An amount of R20 000 was deposited into a bank account and arrangements were made that the complainant would travel to Gauteng to collect the vehicle. “The man went to Gauteng and while on his way, he tried calling the suspect several times.
“He did not answer his phone. The complainant arrived in Gauteng without seeing him and had to make his way back,” said Lt Col Mabaso. After a case was opened at the Estcourt Police Station, an investigation was launched.
Success came last week when a 32-year-old suspect was arrested. Mfanafuthi Mchunu was charged with fraud and appeared in the Estcourt Magistrates Court last week.
