You may have seen it on the news over the weekend – a green anaconda called “Annie” celebrated her 32nd birthday on July 31. This made her the world’s oldest female green anaconda in captivity. But did you know that Annie used to live in Vryheid? She belonged to Paul Swires, who now lives in New Zealand, but he wrote on the Vryheid Herald’s Facebook page: ” I owned Annie for many years in Vryheid and eventually decided that either a zoo or snake park would be a far better future for her to be appreciated and the Montecasino Bird and Reptile Park in Johannesburg took her where she has now become an international star.” Annie has a length of over 4.4 metres and weighs 42.8kg.
