Update: Horror crash leaves 6 dead

In a media statement, acting MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, has expressed his shock after learning of a horrific accident that has claimed six lives at the Driefontein turn-off, near Ladysmith, on the N11 this morning.
According to initial reports, a grey Toyota Cressida travelling from Burford to Ladysmith collided head-on with an Isuzu rigid truck.
The 6 people who died on scene were all from the Cressida.
1 victim sustained minor injuries and was taken to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital to receive medical attention.
The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage, pending investigation.
MEC Dhlomo has expressed sadness and concern at the growing spate of accidents that continue to take people’s lives on our roads. “It is indeed devastating to learn of the accident that has claimed the lives of 6 people this morning near Ladysmith.
“This accident follows one that happened in Bulwer last month and took the lives of 8 people. We reiterate that it is extremely important to obey all the rules of the road and for all road users, especially the drivers, to be extra vigilant at all times.
“Respecting road rules is a sure way to save lives on our roads.
“On behalf of government, we would like to send our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said MEC Dhlomo.
