Bubbles for equality
Bubbles Beyond Borders - Empowerment Fair will take place on August 22, and the event will be open for the entire community. It promises to be an educational day for men, women, boys and girls alike.
In an era of equality, girls still find themselves victims of sexism.
“It is usually in subtle ways, like telling your son he throws like a girl. What kind of message is that?” asked Haseena Patel, co-founder with her sister Shameema, of Leave No Girl Behind International (LNGBI).
She added while everyone liked to see their sons grow into powerful men, it was not until girls were given the same opportunities and treated like their male counterparts, the discrepancies of sexism would be broken down.
“The first thing is recognising girls were not being empowered, and one would find the need to improve life for girls.”
Bubbles Beyond Borders was initiated by the two sisters last year. The campaign is an event that takes place on a specific day during Women’s Month, where girls can learn about empowering themselves within the community. After the empowerment session, girls then blow bubbles together to show their support of gender equality.

Through supporting events as Bubbles Beyond Borders, one can make a change for the better.
“You could contribute directly to your own community and the girls and women living in it,” Haseena said. The event will be taking place at St Dominic’s Academy from 9.40am until 4.30am. “It is something that does not require money or a lot of time. Through making little changes in our community we can make a big change in the world,” concluded Shameema.
