Violence threatened to erupt between members of rival taxi organisations at the Newcastle Taxi Rank this morning, around 6am.
The nature of the dispute is unclear at present.
Police were called in when mobs threatened to settle their dispute in the usual manner; with sticks and stones.
Police responded equipped in full riot gear, and threatened to fire rubber bullets in retaliation.
The impending violence subsided, and no injuries have been reported at this stage.
The situation is under control, and police remain on scene to monitor and prevent any crimes from occurring.
