Re-live the Transvaal War of Independence
The KZN Branch of the SA Military History Society will be marching into Newcastle this weekend, bringing the First Anglo-Boer War to life.
History fundis are in for a treat this weekend.
The KwaZulu-Natal Branch of the South African Military History Society will be doing its annual Battlefield Tour from August 15 to August 16.
The focus of the tour will be on the Transvaal War of Independence, more commonly known as the First Anglo-Boer War that took place from 1880 to 1881.
“The tour guide will be the well-known Ken Gillings from Durban, who is probably one of the top guides in the Province. So, don’t miss this opportunity ,” said Louis Eksteen, curator of Fort Amiel Museum.
The tour will start at 8.30am at Fort Amiel on Saturday, proceeding to Lang’s Nek, before heading out to Schuinshoogte.
On Sunday, the tour will include a visit to Majuba Mountain, where a lecture will be given at the foot of the mountain for those unable to climb.
For the more daring, an expedition will be held to the top of the mountain.
The tour is set to end at O’Neills Cottage.
History buffs who are interested in joining the tour, will be charged R50 per person for the entire weekend.
All funds will go towards the KZN Branch of the SA Military History Society’s funds.
An optional fee of R25 for entrance at Majuba will also be charged.
Interested parties are encouraged to bring water, hats, folding chairs, snacks, a walking stick, a jacket, binoculars, walking shoes and snacks to make the excursion more enjoyable.
Own transport is also required.
