Vryheid mail stopped by fuel crisis

THE WIDELY reported fuel crisis in the Post Office also affected deliveries to and from the Vryheid Post Office. It was reported nationally last week that the Post Office was experiencing a financial problem and that there was no money for fuel.

Vryheid was affected. A reliable but anonymous source said on Friday last week that there was no mail moving into and out of Vryheid, but that mail posted in Vryheid for delivery in Vryheid was still getting processed.

On Monday this week, the inter-town movement of mail apparently resumed. A truck of mail arrived in Vryheid, and it collected mail for processing and delivery elsewhere. The source said that this was to be the norm in future – one delivery and pick-up per day.

This crisis is only the last in a series that have rocked the Post Office nationally for over a year. These crises have included South African Airways suspending its contract with the Post Office due to unpaid bills.

The national airline stopped carrying mail to and from overseas postal services because the Post Office’s failure to pay for the service.
