A walk for peace and non-violence
Keeping the spirit of peace and unity alive, and raising funds for notable causes, the Gandhi Development Trust’s (GDT) Peace Walk will pass through Newcastle this month.

Keeping the spirit of peace and unity alive, and raising funds for notable causes, the Gandhi Development Trust’s (GDT) Peace Walk will pass through Newcastle this month.
This project is in conjunction with the Rising Sun, a Caxton sister publication.
In September, the Lenasia-based newspaper and the GDT will embark on a two-week historic walk from Gauteng to Durban, covering 750 kilometres, as of September 19.
And on September 24 and 25, the team is in Newcastle.
“The project, which is gaining momentum, will grandly conclude on October 2 at the Mahatma Gandhi Settlement in Inanda, Durban,” explained Rising Sun CEO, Vijay Maharaj.
The concluding date, interestingly enough, coincides with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, and all accumulated funds will go towards the GDT.
Organisers explained this was remaining true to the fundaments of community upliftment.
They have also appealed to residents to offer their homes as overnight stop points for the participants, in order for the latter to regain their energy for the next legs of the walk.
About 25 walkers are invested in the walk thus far.
“We would appreciate it if your town could host participants. You could also show support towards this charitable initiative by hosting a mini fun walk of about 5km, in which all proceeds raised are donated towards the GDT, an organisation embodying the values and morals which Gandhi himself, possessed.”
As the great Mahatma Gandhi once said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Agreeing wholeheartedly, Mr Maharaj and organisers urged residents to make a positive difference in communities countrywide.
