Two Newcastillians formed part of the 65 teams, 18 days and 8 000 kilometres, known as the Put Foot Rally, taking place across five countries in Southern Africa.

Theuns Nel and Steven Brown, who both hail from Newcastle, joined two of their Stellenbosch University friends on the rally, with help from many local sponsors.
“The rally met every expectation that we had envisioned before we started,” said Theuns.
Dubbed ‘soul and sole’, the rally is about benefitting rural communities, providing shoes, socks, clothing, stationery and food to children with big dreams and few resources.
Money raised by the Put Foot Foundation is also used to build and renovate houses.
Driving in a Land Rover named Dorris, Theuns, Steven, Luke Strachan and Ian Dicks felt the journey had gone better than expected, with the vehicle handling the rugged terrain with surprising ease.
“She didn’t have too many electronics under her bonnet, which made it better as the cars normally end up in water and mud, causing huge problems.”
Apart from a close encounter with a hippo on Lake Kariba, the team were never in danger, and Theuns recommended others undertake this epic adventure.
“The rally really opened my eyes and helped me reflect about many aspects of my life.”
