Dannhauser police have arrested two men in connection with the brutal murders of Venktas Govender (87) and Piet Maré.
Mr Govender’s body was found outside the town on the morning of September 3. He had been stripped of his clothing and his stolen car was found near Mafusini.
Mr Maré was viciously stabbed on the night of September 4 while locking up his shop in Durnacol. He was taken to Newcastle Hospital where he died.
The breakthrough in both cases occurred on Tuesday when Dannhauser police received information that two men, believed to be behind a string of crimes in the area, where on their way to the town from Osizweni and Madadeni.
The men, aged between 20 and 25, were arrested at the Shell Garage by by Detective SGT. BG Mbatha, W/O SP Mdluli and Constable RV Mlaba.
When they were searched they were found in possession of two wrist watches allegedly stolen during a burglary at a Dannhauser church.
After being questioned, the two men led police to two other men in Madadeni, also aged between 20 and 25. They too were arrested after goods allegedly stolen from the Dannhauser area were recovered.
Among the items was a knife allegedly used to stab Mr Maré. Police said later the two men confessed to the murders of both Mr Govender and Mr Maré.
All four men have been arrested and may be linked to other burglaries, robberies, carjacking occurred in Dannhauser area. The case is under investigation.
Dannhauser station commander, Major BV Ntanda, has commended the members for their hard work and bringing to book men believed to be behind two murders that left the community outraged.
