Five died on N11 after car crashes into bridge, lands on electrical cables and burns

Five people died early this morning on the N11 in a horrific crash after a car they were travelling in crashed into a bridge before landing on the railway track electrical cables and catching alight,

When emergency services arrived on scene the car was still burning and the fire had to be extinguished by the fire department.  The accident happened near Pepworth near the Elandslaagte turn-off.

Two women, a man and two children have lost their lives.

Paramedics from KZN Emergency Medical Services together with paramedics from several private ambulance services, the fire department and officers from the RTI and police department, responded to the crash at about 1am

Paramedics on scene say that at this stage the initial identification of the victims are, two adult woman estimated to be about 35 years old, a man estimated to be about the same age and two children, a boy of about seven years old and a girl about 10 years old.

“Emergency services worked on the scene for several hours and only finished just before sunrise,” said spokesman Robert McKenzie.

“The cause of the crash is not known at this stage and will be investigated by the police.

“As KZN EMS we would like to send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victims.”
