KZN Premier is determined to fight corruption head-on in the province
'Approximately R14.7 million was recovered from 1567 officials who benefitted irregularly from housing subsidies'
KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Senzo Mchunu says he is determined to fight corruption head on in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.
“Since he assumed the Premiership of the Province, he has acted decisively on corruption because he believe that it rob the poor of the much needed services. After ensuring that the much debated Manase Report was released, which dealt with perceived corruption at EThekwini Municipality, he moved to the Provincial Government,” said Sibusiso Magwaza, the Premier’s acting spokesperson
The Report of the Special Investigative Unit made it clear that his attempts of busting corrupt officials are beginning to pay dividends.
During the 2014/15 financial year the SIU was able to claim back more than half a billion rand from unscrupulous government employees acting in cahoots with some service providers. In total R536 500 000 was recovered and claimed back by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government early this year. The extent to which the Premier tackles corruption is evidenced by the unhindered access the law enforcement agencies have when they investigate corruption cases. The following amounts were recovered last year alone:
- R727 140.00 from Government Tenders and Bribery of SAPS Officials
- R6 022 500.00 from Department of Land Affairs and Rural Development emanating from the fraudulent transaction on a Guilderland farm.
- R296 000.00 recovered a Government Employee through the completed forfeiture of assets.
- R19 460 000.00 recovered from the Department of Land Affairs and Rural Development on a transaction of Boschoek farm
- R380 146 000 recovered from Government Tender
- R5 000 000.00 recovered from the Department of Land Affairs and Rural Development
- R30 000.00 bribery of an SAPS official
- R7 000 000.00 Land Affairs and Rural Development
- R42 971 372.00 from SASSA (Social Grants)
“The Premier has not only spoken about corruption in Government, but has demonstrated what needs to be done to get rid of corrupt individual in Government. .Approximately R14.7 million was recovered from 1567 officials who benefitted irregularly from housing subsidies. Investigations are still on-going even in other departments and the Premier is known to be giving a free role to the law enforcement agencies to do their work.”
