Balloons to help Newcastle rise

Newcastle is home to the National Hot Air Balloon Championships, from October 6 to 10.

Newcastle is home to the National Hot Air Balloon Championships, from October 6 to 10.

For many years, explained Johan Pieters, the championships took place in the Free State, but moved to Newcastle after negotiation between conveners and Champ Marketing.

Since then, the competition has boosted the local economy.

With coverage in magazines, national newspapers and kykNET pending, Mr Pieters believes this will bring in marketing value worth hundreds of thousands of Rand.

The event lifts off every competition day at 6am and 2pm.

“If you would like to receive an SMS each morning and afternoon, informing you where the balloons are, send your cellphone number to info@champ.co.za or Whatsapp 082 923 0078.”

Organisers are also looking for helpers within the community to assist at the event in both the mornings and afternoons.

Own transport between various points is a necessity.

Companies who wish to be involved in the event elsewhere can call 034 318 1888 to enquire about hosting the opening function and prize giving.

“The community can look forward to a colourful event in a few weeks’ time.”
